Small Actions, Big Impact

Ball Beverage Packaging AMEA partnered with The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) to promote recycling. The EEG is a professional working group devoted to protecting the environment through education, action programs and community involvement. With the motto, “Small Actions, BIG Impact,” the partnership educates surrounding communities of the importance of “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.” The group boosts the local recycling industry by organizing large scale recycling campaigns. In 2016, the EEG campaign had 117 schools and 142 companies participate, and more than 27 metric tons of waste were diverted from the landfill.

During the first Can Collection Day, held in February 2017, Ball employee volunteers supported various beverage can collection efforts. Additional can recycling campaigns are scheduled throughout 2017.

 

IMPROVING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF RECYCLING IN CHINA

Though beverage can recycling rates in China are very high (estimated at 90 percent for aluminum cans, 75 percent for steel packaging), the environmental benefits of recycling are not well known. Ball launched recan Asia in 2007 to create programs to educate consumers, especially children, about the positive impacts of recycling. recan Asia also conducted research about the behavioral aspects of consumer waste disposal so that effective consumer messaging and education campaigns can be developed.
  
Because official packaging recycling statistics for China are not yet available, Ball and its customers and industry partners initiated a research project to study the characteristics of packaging waste sent to landfills. After the initial survey in 2010, a 2013 follow-up study allowed scientists at the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Science to evaluate trends.
