Ball's Sara Brown Named DBJ Winner

Sara Brown, Sr. Contract AdministratorDenver Business Journal, March 18, 2016:

Sara Brown basically fell into contract management with the U.S. Air Force, but it didn’t take long for her to get caught up in the work. The Oklahoma State University graduate is a senior contract manager at Ball Aerospace & Technology Corp. in Boulder, after only 10 years with the company, and leading all contracting facets for a next-generation fighter jet.

“Contract management is basically a one-stop shop,” said Brown, a Colorado native. “People call us walking MBAs because we negotiate, do contracts, are involved in customer relations, etc. … I’m hooked on aerospace. You can’t get much better than the mission.”

Her community involvement has run the gamut from working with Habitat for Humanity to rebuild homes in the Lyons area after 2013’s devastating floods to delivering meals to the homebound and elderly in Boulder County. She has volunteered in various ways with the Arts!Lafayette’s Art Night Out summer concert series. Brown and her husband, who’s also in contract management, created a scholarship to help freshmen at OSU’s business school, and they’re starting a nonprofit whose mission is to strengthen local communities “through extraordinary projects,” according to Brown’s 40 under 40 nomination.

Brown is keeping her options open about what she might do in 20 years.

“I’m heavily involved in nonprofits, and I hope to eventually retire and run a nonprofit of significant caliber to support the community,” she said.
