Ball Aerospace Showcases Weather and Environmental Contributions at 2015 American Meteorological Society Conference

Phoenix, AZ., Jan. 4, 2015 – Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. will highlight its nearly 50 years of environmental weather spacecraft and sensor contributions as a sponsor of the annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society in Phoenix, Arizona, Jan. 4 - 8. Ball’s capabilities and technologies will be on display in booth 209.
Ball is currently building the nation’s next polar-orbiting weather satellite, the Joint Polar Satellite System-1. A successor to the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite, JPSS-1 will collect data for both weather forecasting and climate monitoring. Ball built the Suomi Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS) and JPSS OMPS instrument.
- On Sunday, Jan. 4, from noon to 4 p.m., Ball will participate in WeatherFest, a free event for the whole family featuring fun weather science and technology activities. Highlights include the Ball Aerospace exhibit, which will offer children and adults the opportunity to learn about weather satellites. Phoenix Convention Center – North Building, Exhibit Hall 1.
- On Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 5 p.m., Sara Tucker, Ball Aerospace principal investigator, will give a presentation on HAWC-OAWL, the High-spectral-Resolution-Lidar for Aerosols Winds and Clouds - Using the Optical Autocovariance Wind Lidar to help scientists better understand how the wind transport of aerosols and water vapor affect air quality and cloud formation. - On Thursday, Jan. 8 at 9:15 a.m., Carl Weimer, Ball Aerospace staff consultant, will give a presentation on ATHENA-OAWL, the Atmospheric Transport, Hurricanes, and Extra-Tropical Numerical Weather Prediction with the Optical Autocovariance Wind Lidar, a mission proposed to NASA’s Earth Venture program. The mission goal is to utilize a Doppler wind lidar installed on the International Space Station to help find a science path for next-generation global weather prediction and climate analysis.
